Two Sails on the Windmill!

As any recent visitors will have noticed, there are two sails are missing from Wilton Windmill.

In mid-September the team was milling successfully when suddenly there was a loud crack followed by splinters of wood falling down from above. They immediately stopped milling to find that one of the sails had dropped out of place from the central iron cross. Luckily it was wedged in position by the straps and didn’t fall further.

At the beginning of October, Paul Sellwood, the Mill’s millwright, and his team came out and took the pair of sails down.

There appears to be a rotten section that has finally given way on one sail. The other three sails should be checked. These are now on the ground waiting to be taken away for repair and the Windmill team is waiting to hear what work needs to be undertaken.

Hopefully the work won't take too long so that our wonderful Windmill is back in working order.
