Wilton Water

Wilton Water is an 8 acre spring water fed lake which is the largest Aquatic Wildlife Trust Site in Wiltshire.

Up to 13 different species have been seen here.  Although the lake is in fact very utilitarian, it also offers a beautiful and peaceful spot to watch wildlife and take photos.

Wilton Water was the result of a number of local waterways being diverted so that the Kennet & Avon Canal had a means of being topped up.  Initially local waterways were redirected to the pound at Lock 60 to keep the canal topped up, but this supply was enhanced by developing Wilton Water.  When the streams were diverted, the watermills could no longer work and so Wilton Windmill was built.  The water is pumped into the Kennet & Avon Canal through the Beam Engines at Crofton.

A lovely 2 mile circular walk via the Roman Road up to Wilton Windmill and back to Wilton pond takes in Wilton Water.
